The Christmas Story

Christmas is such a magical time of the year.  In this day in age it can be tough to make Jesus the true "reason for the season".  So in our imperfect attempt to keep Christmas centered on the birth of our Savior we have started a few family traditions.  We open presents but they are from Mommy and Daddy and siblings - not Santa.  After church on Christmas eve we make a special meal, and act out the Christmas story before opening presents.  We explain to the kids that the birth of Jesus gave us the gift of eternal life, and that we why we give gifts to each other.  Every year we have the intention to give our kids only three presents since that is what baby Jesus got from the three wise men...but somehow more gifts always make their way into our house!   This year was no exception (including too many presents)... Avery was Mary, Cael was Joseph, Gabriel was Angel Gabriel (of-course!), and Luke was a very agitated baby Jesus.

After the reading the Christmas story we tore into our presents just about the time the battery on my camera died.  Take my word for it...the kids had fun!  The top gifts this year were a drum set for Gabe, an "American Girl" look alike doll dressed as a gymnast for Avery, a light up monkey for Luke, basketball shoes for Cael, and a Wii game for daddy.  My parents had taken kids to the dollar store a few days before Christmas to pick out presents for me and Corbin.  I got a coffee mug and make-up.  Corbin got a back massager and a lump of coal!  It was so cute - before Corbin opened up his lump of coal Avery said out of sheer excitement "Daddy, this present might make you scream!"  We certainly made some wonderful memories this holiday season!
